The ‘Titan’ submersible from OceanGate went missing on June 18, 2023. The underwater expedition was manned by five passengers, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush. The other four passengers each paid $250,000 per person to enter the submersible, which set out to give them all up-close views of the wreckage from the Titanic disaster, which sunk in 1912. The other four passengers were British businessman Hamish Harding, French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Pakistani billionaire Shahzada Dawood, and his son Suleman.

The Titan had made its first dive in 2021, with additional expeditions in 2022. After the vessel was reported missing, OceanGate announced that it was making all efforts to recover the craft and its passengers on June 19.  The Coast Guard and other defense organizations also joined a search and rescue mission to locate the craft. The search for the lost submersible piqued public interest, as many began to worry for the crew’s limited oxygen supply on-board. The Coast Guard announced that debris had been found on Thursday, June 22. Later that day, OceanGate released a statement saying that they believed that the crew ‘have sadly been lost.’
