A TikTok user has delighted the Internet after showing how her dog has become the ultimate copycat, as she loves nothing more than to replicate just about everything her feline brother does.
In a hilarious clip posted on TikTok, user @thegoldenbreakfastclub from Kansas City, Missouri, revealed the five signs that her 3-year-old golden retriever, Maple, was "raised by a cat." The pup now appears to be a younger (yet much larger) version of Waffles, the seven-year-old polydactyl cat.
When they get into a fight, Maple is certain to fight back just like her feline counterpart and throw some paws, but when it's time for a snooze, she always finds "the highest part of the couch" to lie on. It doesn't stop there though, as Maple also loves playing with cat toys way more than her boring dog ones, and she will follow Waffles everywhere from the windowsill, even onto the dining room chairs. She may be a bit too big for some spaces, but she'll give it a go.
After seeing how much Waffles has turned Maple into a "little cat-dog," the owners couldn't resist sharing it with their bemused TikTok followers. Since the clip was posted in December 2023, it has already been viewed over 14.4 million times and received more than 2.7 million likes, as TikTok users love seeing the friendship between the unlikely duo.
It may come as no surprise that Maple is so happy to live alongside Waffles the cat. The American Kennel Club notes that golden retrievers have playful and adaptable personalities and can make the perfect cat companion.
However, if you're concerned that your pets won't get along quite so well, the AKC suggests that patience and gradual introductions are the way to go. They shouldn't be expected to meet and instantly become friends as they both need time to accept one another and learn boundaries. Choosing a neutral location to introduce them, keeping the dog on a leash, and keeping it short and sweet are vital for building positive associations.
After slow and gradual introductions, sufficient training for the dog, and giving them both space apart, the AKC states they should be fine to co-exist harmoniously, and it's a bonus if they do become friends.
Since the video of the "signs your dog was raised by a cat" went viral on TikTok, the post has amassed over 6,700 comments so far. Many owners shared the hilarious consequences of having a pet raised by another animal, while others loved seeing Maple try to imitate her feline sibling.
One comment read: "There's [something] so funny about seeing giant dogs do silly cat things."
Another person responded: "I have a cat raised by dogs, and she loves belly rubs."
While another TikTok user wrote: "Our golden retriever was raised by three cats, and he does all of these things."
