BuyPartisan: are your groceries Democratic or Republican? - video

BuyPartisan is an app that scans grocery store barcodes and parses the political donations companies make.

Critics say dividing donations by red and blue bifurcates US politics. 'Knowing what kind of cereal, whether it's a Democratic or Republican cereal, that's just not adding into the political discourse,' said Margaret Kimbrell, executive director of No Labels, an advocacy group dedicated to finding common ground amid congressional gridlock.

But the app's founder, former Capitol Hill staffer Matthew Colbert, says BuyPartisan is just a reflection of political realities. 'All we're doing is empowering the individual with a new set of information they didn't have before,' he said.

A month after its release, BuyPartisan has just shy of 100,000 downloads. Guardian US asked New Yorkers what they thought of it

On 8 September, Clif Bar disputed the accuracy of BuyPartisan's data. Colbert says the app is in beta testing and 'we occasionally encounter glitches that may produce incorrect information'
