Bride wants her bridesmaids to wear ugly $2 thongs so that her legs look 'better' - sparking a heate

A 'hideous' new wedding trend has turned heads all over the globe - with an American bride being harshly criticised for her 'selfish' behaviour.

More and more brides are picking out thongs for their bridal party to wear for the ceremony as a cheap alternative to expensive sandals.

Anna, from the US, revealed that she wanted her bridesmaids to wear $2 flip flops from budget brand Old Navy because she 'loved the idea of [her] legs looking so much better next to [her] friends'.

The bride-to-be is planning a non-traditional wedding with short dresses for the bridal party, so the thongs would be on display for everyone to see.

'It would be an easy and cheap bridesmaid gift, and the photos would be so cute,' she said.

Hundreds on a popular wedding shaming Facebook group slammed her for her 'disgusting' reasoning, and many pointed out how 'annoying' the sound of constant flapping would be walking down the aisle.

'I understand it's budget friendly, but to flat out admit you want your bridesmaids (and closest friends) to not look too good is yikes,' one said.

Another echoed, 'I would never want to upstage the bride but if my friend had these thoughts about wanting me to look bad then they wouldn't be my friend.'

'I want my bridesmaids to look and feel great at my wedding. I couldn't imagine needing to knock others down in order to stand out when you are literally the bride,' a woman said.

A few others understood wanting a budget-friendly option but claimed Anna had the 'wrong attitude'.

'It's one thing to say you want them to match and want a cheaper alternative, it's another to openly admit you want to do it so your 'legs' look better,' a man said.

'Bridesmaid gift? And what are you feeding them for their nice dinner at the wedding? McDonald's?' one called out.

'Paying $100+ for a bridesmaid dress and then pairing it with $2 flip flops is never gonna look right,' a woman argued.

A few claimed Anna could have the best of both worlds in certain situations.

'Maybe if your wedding is on the beach in the sand? But wanting your friends to look 'worse' than you is so weird!' a woman said.

'Looks way better than cowboy boots, Uggs, or Crocs,' another admitted.

'My bridesmaids wore slides. They were comfy and danced all night long. But they had floor length gowns so no one saw their feet,' another former bride revealed.
