ABC Medical Center follows one philosophy. That is, that innovation is more than constant re-invention; it is the practice of making changes that are solely focused on improvement. It is this philosophy that has allowed them to excel in the area of medical care and experience.
ABC Medical Center is a private, not-for-profit institution. Established 135 years ago, it has steadily grown to become one of the leading healthcare institutions in Mexico, renowned for ensuring the health and safety of its patients with the best medical practice. It provides patients with safe and high-quality services, characterized by its patient-focused care and wide range of medical services at the level seen in some of the top-rated hospitals in the world.
The hospital stands out for fostering inclusion and promoting actions to support the healthcare system in Mexico, providing access to medical services for vulnerable populations, investing in research, and training future doctors and nurses.
The use technology and innovation
ABC's innovation strategy and ability to respond to change has been central to its success. Through its continuous growth and evolution approach, ABC has quickly adopted new technologies that have allowed faster and more precise diagnoses - advancing medical treatment and the patient experience. There are multiple examples of this approach in the past few years.
ABC Medical Center has acquired new Siemens dual-energy tomography equipment for its two campuses, offering clearer images, less radiation for the patient and guarantees timely diagnosis with more effective therapeutic options.
At the end of 2021, ABC introduced the new CT simulator, equipment that allows doctors to go one step ahead with advanced and highly personalized therapeutic options. With the latest technology, radiation oncologists can access precise and detailed images of the organs affected by cancer and achieve greater definition in the fundamental images used for planning radiotherapy treatments. The CT simulator equipment also provides greater comfort and closeness to the patient starting high-precision treatment thanks to its different artificial intelligence tools, helping speed up the definition of the first steps of the radiotherapy procedure.
The X-ray Department has abandoned its traditional ways by transitioning from paper to electronic medical records. The multidisciplinary team can now physically review the patient's information with controlled access in a fast, safe, and dynamic manner from different locations.
In 1984 the Echocardiography Department was created. Since then, the Cardiovascular Disease Division has developed through technological advances and the acquisition of modern machinery. The Santa Fe Campus has the first private cardiac catheterization laboratory used to establish a diagnosis and treat some cardiovascular conditions. The laboratory contains coronary physiology records, intracoronary ultrasound, and automatic angiography synchronized with CT, ECHO, and nuclear magnetic resonance images.
Last year the institution invested in a Robotic Surgical Assistant (ROSA), an 'automated helping hand' that assists with knee surgery, bringing an extra measure of precision to total knee replacement, to achieve better results during surgery and shorter recovery times for patients.
Patient-centered communication has played an integral role in ABC's patient-focused care. As José María Zubiría Maqueo, ABC's General Director, stated:
"ABC's purpose is to develop an environment in which patients and their families have access to information, understand the different treatment options, and are more involved in all stages of their care process."
Through the use of technology ABC is able to get closer and communicate better with its patients. They use online platforms such as their new website, WhatsApp, and social media to help patients find information more easily regardless of where they come from, schedule appointments, fill out documents, and pay for some services.
International recognition and accreditation
The ABC Medical Center has developed such a reputation for their quality of care that it is receiving international recognition for its practices. It is spread over two campuses – Observatory and Santa Fe – both accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) Hospital Program, one of the world's most rigorous healthcare accreditations. This guarantees that the hospital's status as a healthcare institution that abides by the world's highest quality and security standards.
The College of American Pathologists (CAP), dedicated to ensuring pathology and laboratory medicine quality, has granted accreditation to ABCs Clinical Laboratory, Surgical Pathology, and Blood Bank for meeting the high-quality standards required to provide appropriate, personalized patient care.
Furthermore, the American College of Radiology has accredited the hospital's mammography test for its safety, image quality, and diagnostic certainty. Additionally, ABC is the only hospital in Mexico internationally certified for treating cerebrovascular diseases (stroke).
Green projects and a commitment to sustainability
ABC has also taken action to reduce the industry's environmental impact through technology.
The climate crisis has translated into a human health crisis as waste, poor air quality, and pollution affect people's health. Therefore, caring for the environment is seen as a preventative measure at ABC, and many of its actions are taken having considered whether they will turn the planet into a clean, healthy, and safe place.
It is proactive in its approach to complying with current and future environmental regulations. Each year the institution sets new challenges to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
So far, the hospital has built an ecological garden and water treatment plants; it has sustainable-energy powered buildings, solar water heaters and has changed from conventional boilers to hybrid boilers, achieving an emissions reduction of almost 90% since 2019. Furthermore, ABC is conscious of the importance of taking part in controlling waste disposal and its proper management.
Faced with continuous challenges and changes, both medically and environmentally, ABC Medical Center has continued to work with clear intensity and dynamism towards one primary goal: to improve the health of Mexico.
