140 mph chase spans 2 Iowa counties, ends in crash

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — An Illinois man is facing multiple charges after leading law enforcement on a chase that reached more than 140 miles per hour and ended with a crash in Jasper County.

Sgt. Alex Dinkla with the Iowa State Patrol tells WHO 13 the incident began around 9:00 p.m. Monday when the ISP and West Des Moines Police pulled over a 2023 Chevy Camaro for speeding on I-80 at Hickman Road. Sgt. Dinkla said the driver, later identified as 34-year-old Harold Wilbourn Jr. of Naperville, gave officers a false name and then sped off.

The pursuit continued east, all the way past Newton in Jasper County, and ended in a crash near the exit ramp for Highway T22. Sgt. Dinkla said Wilbourn was taken to a local hospital to be checked out before being booked into the Jasper County Jail.

According to criminal complaints in the case, Wilbourn smelled of marijuana when he was taken into custody and showed signs of being impaired. Law enforcement officers located a substance resembling marijuana in the vehicle along with rounds and a magazine from a 9 mm handgun.

Sgt. Dinkla said Wilbourn is a felon and has active warrants for burglary out of Florida.

Wilbourn is charged with eluding, OWI, dominion of a firearm by a felon, and providing false identification. He is also facing multiple traffic offenses related to the chase.
